Quick answer
A thermal printhead wears out with use, but how fast depends mostly on you: clean it with isopropyl alcohol at every roll or ribbon change, run the lowest darkness that still gives sharp barcodes, and use a ribbon at least as wide as the label. When a white line stays in the same place after cleaning, a dot has burnt out and the head should be replaced with a genuine part made for your exact model and resolution.
Is it the head, or something else?
Before you order a new printhead, rule out the cheap causes. Use this checklist from the most likely to the least likely fix.
| What you see | First check | If that does not help |
|---|---|---|
| A thin white streak in the feed direction | Clean the heating line; adhesive or dust often causes it. | If the streak stays in the same spot, that dot is dead. Replace the head. |
| One side lighter than the other | Clean the head and the platen roller, and re-centre the media guides. | Check head pressure and look for a worn platen roller. |
| Print smears or wipes off | Is the ribbon grade right for the label material? | Raise darkness gradually or lower print speed. |
| Dark lines or rough patches | Look for debris or label glue on the head. | Scratches on the head surface cannot be repaired; replace it. |
| Barcodes fail at the customer | Print the self-test pattern and look for gaps. | Correct settings, or replace the head if dots are missing. |
On supported TSC printers, TSC Console's TPH Care feature spots bad printhead dots while printing and halts the job, and Sense Care keeps a printhead odometer, so you can plan a replacement before labels start failing.
Cleaning routine that actually works
- Turn the printer off, unplug it and open the head. Give the head a few minutes to cool.
- Take out the label roll and, on thermal transfer printers, the ribbon.
- Moisten a printhead cleaning pen, cleaning card or lint-free swab with high-purity isopropyl alcohol. Avoid water, household sprays and other solvents.
- Wipe the narrow dark strip of heating dots in a single direction until the swab comes away clean. Never use a blade, screwdriver or abrasive pad.
- Wipe the platen roller and the media path as well, since dust there ends up on the head.
- Allow the alcohol to evaporate fully, reload media, recalibrate if you changed stock, and print a test label.
How often: once per ribbon on thermal transfer printers and once per label roll on direct thermal printers. Increase this in dusty godowns, near cutting or packing machines, or when you run synthetic or abrasive labels.
Settings and media that extend head life
- Darkness: the hotter the head runs, the faster dots age. Find the lowest setting that still scans well.
- Ribbon width: keep the ribbon slightly wider than the label so the head never rubs bare media at the edges.
- Media quality: cheap labels can shed dust and coating onto the head. Good labels and matched ribbons cost less than an early head failure.
- Platen roller: a worn or nicked roller causes uneven pressure. Printronix 4-inch and 6-inch platen roller kits are listed in our spares range.
Which printhead fits your printer?
Printheads are model-specific. Match the printer model, the print width and the dpi exactly; a 203 dpi printer takes a 203 dpi head, and you cannot change resolution by fitting a different one unless your model is sold in both versions. Note that 203 dpi gives 8 dots per mm, 300 dpi gives about 12, and 600 dpi about 24. If possible, read the part number off the old head before ordering.

Warranty and running costs
Genuine Printronix OEM printheads bought from us carry a warranty of 1 year or 25 km, whichever is earlier. White dots, physical damage and scratches are not covered, which is one more reason to clean gently and use matched media. For TSC printheads, the warranty terms are confirmed at quotation.
Current prices are shown on each printhead's product page. For several printers or an annual spares plan, ask for a project quote. For longer cover on a new Printronix printer, add the 1-year extended warranty or the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack when you buy the printer. If you would rather have an engineer fit and calibrate the new head, visit our Delhi service centre page.
Warranty and cover options
New printers ship with the standard manufacturer's warranty against manufacturing defects. Longer cover can only be bought at the time you buy the printer. You can choose a 1-year extended warranty, or a comprehensive warranty for 3 or 5 years, such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack. There is no 1-year comprehensive option, and comprehensive cover can't be added later. The comprehensive warranty takes the place of the standard warranty, and both run together from the printer's invoice date. So a 5-year plan means 5 years in total, not 1 + 5. Once cover ends, ask us about an AMC.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a printhead myself?
It depends on the model, so follow the printer manual for your printer. Switch the printer off first, handle the head by its edges, and run a calibration and test print afterwards. For industrial printers, or if you are unsure, ask an engineer to fit it.
What does a white line on every label mean?
Usually dirt on the heating line or a burnt-out dot. Clean the head first; if the line stays in exactly the same place, the dot has failed and the head needs replacing.
Which cleaning liquid should I use on a printhead?
High-purity isopropyl alcohol on a cleaning pen, card or lint-free swab. Do not use water, household cleaners or other solvents.
What warranty comes with a Printronix printhead?
Genuine Printronix OEM printheads carry a warranty of 1 year or 25 km, whichever is earlier. White dots, physical damage and scratches are excluded.
What warranty comes with a TSC printhead?
Warranty terms for TSC printheads are confirmed at quotation. Ask us before ordering and we will state them on your quote.
Can I fit a 300 dpi head to get sharper print on my 203 dpi printer?
Generally no. Heads are matched to the printer model and resolution, so order the head that matches your model, width and dpi.
Does a higher darkness setting damage the head?
Running hotter than needed speeds up wear on the heating dots. Use the lowest darkness and a sensible speed that still produce crisp, scannable barcodes.
How do I find the right part number?
Check the model on the printer's rating label and, if you can, the part number printed on the old head. Then match it in the fit tables above or send us photos through the spares enquiry form.
