Picking the right printer

Where should I start when choosing a barcode printer?

Start with how many labels you print a day. Mobile printers are for printing where the work happens, desktop models handle up to a few thousand labels daily, and industrial or enterprise models are built for round-the-clock lines. After that, settle the label width you need (2 to 8 inch), the dpi (203, 300 or 600), the print method, the interfaces, and any RFID or verification requirement. Browse all models in our printer catalogue.

What should an online seller buy for marketplace shipping labels?

For 4 x 6 inch labels for Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho, a 4-inch direct thermal desktop such as the TSC DA310 or DA210 is the easiest option. To print product or MRP labels with a ribbon as well, consider the TSC TE244 or TTP-345, both thermal transfer. Matching rolls are in e-commerce shipping labels.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer: what is the practical difference?

Direct thermal needs no ribbon because the label itself is heat-sensitive. It is cheap to run and ideal for shipping labels, but the print gradually fades when exposed to heat or light. Thermal transfer fuses ribbon ink (wax, wax-resin or resin) onto a plain label, so the print survives far longer on product, asset and compliance labels.

How many dpi do I need?

203 dpi is fine for most shipping and carton labels. 300 dpi makes small text, logos and 2D codes sharper, which helps product and pharma labels. 600 dpi suits tiny labels such as those on electronic components, jewellery and vials.

How do desktop, industrial and enterprise printers differ?

Desktop units are small and low-cost, best for light or moderate daily volumes. Industrial models such as the TSC MB, MH and MX series use metal frames for more speed and duty. Enterprise printers such as the Printronix T4000, T6000e and T8000 add 24/7 toughness, wide emulation support, fleet management and options like RFID and inline ODV-2D verification.

Can a new printer use the label formats from my current printer?

Usually, yes. Most TSC models understand the common printer languages through emulation, and Printronix Auto ID models have an especially wide range of emulations. Send us your current printer model and a label file and we will check before you buy.

Model questions

How are the Printronix T820, T82R, T830 and T83R different?

They are the four Printronix T800 desktop variants. At 200 dpi you get the T820, or the T82R with RFID. At 300 dpi you get the T830, or the T83R with RFID. The RFID versions print and encode UHF RFID labels in a single pass. More on our T800 page.

TSC TE210 or TE310: which should I pick?

Both are 4-inch thermal transfer desktops in the TSC TE series. The TE210 has 203 dpi resolution; the TE310 has 300 dpi, which suits small fonts and compact barcodes.

T4000, T6000e or T8000: which Printronix suits my line?

The T4000 is the compact entry-level industrial printer. The T6000e is the all-rounder, in 4-inch and 6-inch widths, with optional RFID or ODV-2D. The T8000 sits at the top, offered in 4, 6 and 8 inch widths with optional ODV-2D for lines that cannot afford downtime.

What is a print engine used for?

It is the printing mechanism that goes inside an automatic labelling machine, so a line can print a label and apply it in one step. From TSC you can choose PEX-2000 engines (4-inch or 6-inch, in left-hand and right-hand builds) or print modules based on the TE, MB and MH printers.

Do you sell handheld terminals as well?

Yes. We sell BlueBird rugged Android handhelds such as the BlueBird S10 Wi-Fi and S10 4G for warehouse, retail, stocktake and field work. See all mobile terminals.

RFID printing

Which RFID printers can I order?

On the Printronix side: the T800 RFID (T82R and T83R), plus RFID versions of the T4000 and T6000e. From TSC: the Alpha-40L RFID mobile and other RFID-ready models. We also help pick the inlay or tag, set up encoding and calibrate. Start with the Printronix T800 RFID.

Can on-metal RFID tags be printed and encoded?

Yes, on selected Printronix industrial RFID printers, which can work with on-metal tags besides ordinary UHF labels. Share your tag and application so we can suggest the right model.

Which RFID frequency do these printers work with?

UHF, also called RAIN RFID, which is the band most supply-chain, retail and asset-tracking projects use. The chips and tag sizes supported differ from model to model.

ODV-2D barcode inspection

What does ODV-2D do?

It is Printronix Auto ID's built-in verifier for the T8000 and the 4-inch T6000e. As each label prints, it grades linear codes to ISO/IEC 15416 and 2D codes to ISO/IEC 15415; a label that fails is overstruck and printed again automatically.

Why check barcodes inline rather than offline?

An offline verifier only checks samples after the run. ODV-2D checks every label as it prints, reprints failures without operator help, compares the data with the host and stores a grade for every label, which is useful evidence in chargeback disputes. See barcode verification.

What is in an ODV grade report?

For every barcode it logs the data, the symbology, the overall ISO grade from A to F and detailed readings such as contrast, modulation, decodability, defects and quiet zone. Reports export as CSV or stream as PXML.

Can ODV-2D be fitted to a printer I already have?

Yes. Upgrade kits exist for the 4-inch and 6-inch T8000 and the 4-inch T6000e, for example the T8000 6-inch kit and the T6000e 4-inch kit.

Label and fleet software

Can I buy BarTender here?

Yes. All four editions are on the store: Starter, Professional, Automation and Enterprise. We help choose the edition and licence count and connect printing to ERP systems such as SAP and Oracle. For a formal quote use the BarTender enquiry form.

How do I know which BarTender edition fits?

Starter covers basic label design. Professional adds data links to Excel, SQL and similar sources. Automation lets ERP, WMS and similar systems drive printing. Enterprise layers on revision control and management across several sites. Our Knowledge Base has a full edition guide.

Which tools can manage a printer fleet remotely?

TSC Console is a Windows program for TSC printers; TSC Console Web runs in a browser and covers mixed TSC and Printronix fleets; PrintNet Enterprise is the utility for Printronix Auto ID printers. All three support remote setup, monitoring, alerts and firmware updates.

Do I pay for PrintNet Enterprise?

No, it costs nothing for Printronix Auto ID users. It also includes Auto ID Data Manager for collecting ODV-2D grade reports.

Labels, ribbons and media

Do you sell labels and ribbons?

Yes: barcode labels, direct thermal shipping labels for marketplace sellers, and ribbons in wax, wax-resin and resin grades. Labels can also be made to your size and material.

How do I pick a ribbon?

Match it to the label. Paper labels for everyday jobs take wax. Coated paper or films that must not smudge take wax-resin. Polyester or polypropylene that will meet chemicals, heat or weather takes resin.

My labels are fading. What is wrong?

Direct thermal labels fade naturally with heat, sunlight and age; for long life, switch to thermal transfer with a suitable ribbon. A darkness setting that is too low or a worn printhead can also cause faint print.

Spares, service and warranty

Can I buy genuine TSC and Printronix printheads online?

Yes. Genuine OEM printheads are listed for both brands in our TSC printheads and Printronix printheads collections, while other parts such as platen rollers, cutters, rewinders, control panels and ODV kits sit in spares and accessories. Each order comes with a GST invoice.

What warranty applies to OEM printheads?

For genuine Printronix OEM printheads the cover is 1 year or 25 km, whichever is earlier, under OEM terms, and it does not cover white dots, physical damage or scratches. For TSC printheads, we confirm the terms at quotation.

How can I make a printhead last longer?

Head life depends on media, ribbon, darkness and cleaning. Clean it regularly with isopropyl alcohol, use good labels with a ribbon wider than the label, and do not set darkness higher than the job needs. Our Knowledge Base has a full printhead care guide.

Where can my printer be repaired in Delhi?

You can drop it off or courier it to our Janakpuri service centre in New Delhi, or book an engineer visit anywhere in Delhi NCR. We fit genuine parts and offer annual maintenance contracts. Details on our service centre page.

Is extended cover or AMC available?

Yes, but longer cover has to be chosen when you buy the printer. You can add a 1-year extended warranty, or a 3-year or 5-year comprehensive warranty such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack (there is no 1-year comprehensive option). Neither can be bought later. The comprehensive warranty replaces the standard manufacturer's warranty and runs from the printer's invoice date, so total cover is 3 or 5 years, not 1 + 3 or 1 + 5. Once the warranty ends, we offer AMC.

Can I buy a comprehensive warranty for a printer I already own?

No. Comprehensive warranty must be purchased together with the new printer, and it starts from the printer's invoice date. For a printer you already own, ask us about an AMC instead.

Can I order a spare that is not listed?

Yes. Send the printer model and part details through the spares enquiry form and we will check availability and quote.
