Quick answer
Pick an RFID printer by volume and by where the label is made. A Printronix T800 RFID desktop (T82R at 200 dpi or T83R at 300 dpi) suits a counter or office. A Printronix T4000 or T6000e RFID industrial printer suits continuous runs and on-metal asset tags. With the TSC Alpha-40L RFID, staff can print and encode at the shelf, dock or field site. All of them encode UHF tags (EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-63) and none of them encode HF tags.
Each of these printers writes data to the chip inside the label, checks it, and prints the barcode and text on the face in the same pass. That single pass is what keeps the printed and encoded data in step.
Which RFID printer should you buy?
| Printer | Where it fits | Pick this if… |
|---|---|---|
| Printronix T800 RFID (T82R / T83R) | Desktop | You encode tens or a few hundred labels a day at a desk, store room or dispatch counter |
| Printronix T4000 RFID | 4-inch industrial | You need industrial build and RFID encoding but want to spend less than on a traditional industrial RFID printer |
| Printronix T6000e RFID (T6204e / T6304e / T6604e) | Enterprise industrial, 4-inch and 6-inch | You run high volumes, tag metal assets, or want inline barcode verification (ODV-1D or ODV-2D) as well |
| TSC Alpha-40L RFID | Mobile, battery-powered | Labels must be made where the item is, such as in-store exception tagging or field assets |
| TSC MB241T RFID / MB341T RFID | Compact 4-inch industrial | You need a space-saving industrial unit; the tear-off version takes on-metal tags up to 1.65 mm thick |

Five checks before you order tags
- Frequency. Confirm your readers are UHF. An HF or NFC system needs different printers and tags.
- Surface. Metal reflects RF signals, so a standard label on a metal item will not read. On-metal tags put a thin foam layer between the inlay and the surface, so they usually measure at least 1 mm. They should also have a "bridge" between tags so they move smoothly through the printer.
- Inlay and chip. Printronix says the T6000e works with most major inlay and on-metal tag brands, and TSC keeps a validated list for its own RFID models. Inlay position still differs between suppliers, so send us sample labels to test on your chosen printer before you place a bulk order.
- Label life. For long-life asset tags, use thermal transfer with a durable ribbon. The Alpha-40L RFID is direct thermal only, which is fine for short-life retail and shipping labels.
- Software. Your labelling software must send encoding commands. The Alpha-40L RFID accepts RFID commands in TSPL and ZPL2. For design and data connections, see our label design software or the BarTender enquiry page.
Setting up and calibrating
- T6000e RFID: a media-loading diagram is printed inside the media cover. Once labels and ribbon are in, run RFID calibration from the RFID menu. The printer feeds three or four labels and picks the best encoding position and RF power on its own, for standard and on-metal stock alike. Repeat for each new label type.
- Alpha-40L RFID: load gap or black-mark RFID labels on 0.75, 1 or 1.5 inch cores, at least 0.625 inch (15.9 mm) long. Auto-calibration sets it up without separate utilities.
- Remote setup: TSC Console Web supports RFID calibration, read and write over a network connection.
- Save profiles: the T6000e can hold up to five configuration sets, which helps if one printer handles several tag types.
Running costs and consumables
Running costs are the RFID labels, ribbon for thermal transfer models, and the printhead over time.
- Labels and ribbons: see barcode labels and stickers and thermal transfer ribbons. The T6000e RFID takes ribbons up to 450 m on a 1-inch core and labels from 0.25 inch long.
- Match RFID and non-RFID heads. Some Printronix printers use a different head on RFID models. For the T6000e RFID, the 4-inch 300 dpi RFID head is part P220358-001. The standard non-RFID 300 dpi head is a different part, P220355-001. On the older T6000, the 4-inch 300 dpi RFID assembly is P220064-902.
- T800 RFID heads: the 203 dpi head for the T82R is part 98-0730027-00LF, and part 98-0730027-01LF is listed for the T830R. Confirm your serial number with us before ordering.
- Head warranty: On the T6000e, Printronix covers a head used with ribbon for a year (or 1 million linear inches) and a head used ribbon-free for half a year (180 days, or the same 1 million inches), whichever limit is hit sooner. Store-listed heads carry 1 year or 25 km and exclude white dots, physical damage and scratches.

Upgrades worth knowing about
- A standard 4-inch T6000e can be upgraded to RFID, but only with the internal antenna and with limited backup and overstrike. If RFID is in your plans, buying the RFID model from the start is usually better.
- On the T6000e, Wi-Fi, GPIO and parallel interfaces can be added later as field kits.
- T6000e printheads are interchangeable across resolutions (203, 300 and 600 dpi on 4-inch; 203 and 300 dpi on 6-inch). The printer detects the change automatically, and no tools are needed.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Labels come out with a void pattern printed over them | The tag failed to encode and the printer overstruck it | Rerun RFID calibration for that label; check the inlay against the validated list |
| High failure rate after changing label supplier | Inlay position or chip differs | Calibrate again; send samples to us for testing |
| Tags on metal items do not read | Standard labels used on metal | Switch to on-metal tags and a printer that feeds thick media |
| Thick tags jam | No bridge between tags, or the printer is not rated for the thickness | Use bridged on-metal stock and a suitable model, such as the T6000e or MB241 RFID tear-off version |
| Printed barcode fails customer checks | Print quality, not RFID | Consider the T6000e with ODV verification; see barcode verification |
Warranty and cover options
New printers ship with the standard manufacturer's warranty against manufacturing defects. Longer cover can only be bought at the time you buy the printer. You can choose a 1-year extended warranty, or a comprehensive warranty for 3 or 5 years, such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack. There is no 1-year comprehensive option, and comprehensive cover can't be added later. The comprehensive warranty takes the place of the standard warranty, and both run together from the printer's invoice date. So a 5-year plan means 5 years in total, not 1 + 5. Once cover ends, ask us about an AMC.
Frequently asked questions
Which RFID printer is best for a small business starting out?
For low to medium daily volumes at a desk or counter, a Printronix T800 RFID desktop is the usual starting point. Choose the T82R for 200 dpi or the T83R for 300 dpi.
Can these printers write HF or NFC tags?
No. Every printer covered here works with UHF tags to EPC Gen2 (ISO 18000-63) and nothing else. HF and NFC tags need different equipment.
Why do I need special tags for metal items?
Metal reflects RF signals, so a standard RFID label on metal cannot be read. On-metal tags add a foam spacer that usually takes them to 1 mm or thicker, so choose a printer rated to feed that thickness.
Can I add RFID to my existing T6000e later?
A standard 4-inch T6000e can be upgraded, but only with the internal antenna and with limited backup and overstrike. If you expect to need RFID, buy the RFID model from the start.
How often should I calibrate an RFID printer?
Calibrate whenever you change label type or supplier. On the T6000e, RFID calibration in the RFID menu feeds three or four labels to set the encoding position and RF power. The Alpha-40L RFID calibrates automatically.
Is the RFID printhead the same as the standard one?
Not always. For example, the T6000e 4-inch 300 dpi RFID head is P220358-001, while the non-RFID 300 dpi head is P220355-001. Always match the part to your exact model.
Can I print and encode RFID labels away from a desk?
Yes. With its own battery, the TSC Alpha-40L RFID writes RAIN UHF labels on the spot and connects to phones and handhelds over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
Will you test my RFID labels before I buy in bulk?
Yes. Send us sample labels or tags and we can test them on the printer you plan to use before you place a large order.
