Quick answer
For receipts and tickets on a tight budget, the Alpha-3R is enough. For a mix of 3-inch labels and receipts, take the Alpha-30R, or the Alpha-30L if you want a colour screen, a built-in peeler and a larger roll. For 4-inch shipping labels pick the Alpha-40L, and choose the Alpha-40L RFID only if staff must encode UHF tags on the spot. Every Alpha model prints direct thermal at 203 dpi, so none of them needs a ribbon.
Which model should you buy?
| What your team prints | Model | Print width / speed | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bills, receipts and tickets | Alpha-3R | 72 mm / 4 ips | Lowest-cost option; over 30 hours of receipt printing per charge; 550 g |
| Shelf labels, markdowns, receipts | Alpha-30R Basic or Premium | 72 mm / 5 or 6 ips | Linerless support, smart battery; the Premium version is faster and adds SOTI Connect |
| 3-inch labels that must be peeled and applied | Alpha-30L | 72 mm / 5 ips | Built-in peeler, colour LCD, 67 mm roll, microSD slot; 745 g |
| 4-inch courier and logistics labels | Alpha-40L | 104 mm / 5 ips | Media up to 112 mm wide and more than 45 hours in TSC's receipt test; 985 g |
| RFID labels at the point of use | Alpha-40L RFID | 104 mm / 5 ips | RAIN UHF encoding with auto calibration, 6,200 mAh smart battery |
A simple rule: if the job ends with a slip handed to a customer, a 3-inch receipt model is enough. If it ends with a label stuck on a parcel or a shelf, choose by label width. Product pages show the current price. For a delivery fleet, or printers bundled with chargers, cases and media, ask us for a bulk or project quote.
A word on durability: The Alpha-30R, 30L and 40L carry an IP54 rating and are built to MIL-STD-810 military tests for drops and vibration. The Alpha-30R survives a 2.1 m drop and the Alpha-30L, 40L and 40L RFID a 1.8 m drop; the optional protective case raises that to 2.5 m. The Alpha-3R is rated IP54 inside its case and for a 1.5 m drop.
Setting it up
- Charge the battery fully before the first shift. On the Alpha-40L RFID the USB-C port is for data only, so charge through the battery, a cradle or a charger.
- Pair the device. On newer models, tap an NFC-enabled phone on the printer to pair over Bluetooth 5.0 (Apple MFi certified) without typing any credentials. For warehouse-wide use, order the dual-band Wi-Fi version with fast roaming. The Alpha-30L and 40L ship as either USB-C + MFi Bluetooth 5.0 + NFC, or USB-C + Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.2 + NFC, so choose when you order.
- Install the app or SDK. The TSC Mobile Utility app (Android and iOS) helps with setup and troubleshooting. For in-house apps, TSC offers SDKs across Android, iOS, Windows and Windows Mobile, plus OPOS drivers for POS software.
- Check the command language. Newer models run TSPL-EZC, which emulates EPL2, ZPL2 and CPCL, or they can use ESC-POS instead. On the Alpha-3R the options are TSPL-EZ (covering EPL2 and ZPL2), ESC-POS and CPCL. Most existing delivery or billing apps can print without new code.
- Load the media printed side out (outside wound). The Alpha-3R and Alpha-30R hold a 57 mm diameter receipt roll; the Alpha-30R takes a 12.5 mm core, or 19.1 mm with an adaptor. The Alpha-30L, 40L and 40L RFID hold a 67 mm roll.
- Calibrate after changing media type, from the printer or from TSC Console under Functions, Printer Configuration, Calibration. The Alpha-40L RFID calibrates for RFID labels automatically.
Running costs and consumables
With no ribbon to buy, your running cost is mainly paper and labels, plus a spare battery for long routes.
- Media sizes: the Alpha-30R and 30L take media 25.4–80 mm wide; the Alpha-40L takes 50.8–112 mm. The Alpha-3R takes receipts 50.8–80 mm wide and labels 50.8–78 mm wide and at least 25.4 mm long.
- Short labels: the Alpha-30L and 40L handle labels from 12 mm long, or 25.4 mm (1 inch) when using the peeler. Peeler mode prints at 2 or 3 ips.
- Direct thermal quality matters. Cheap thermal paper fades and scuffs. For courier labels see e-commerce shipping labels, and for other stock see barcode labels and stickers.
- Accessories: protective case with shoulder strap, belt clip, Li-ion smart batteries, 1-slot and 4-slot chargers and docking cradles, in-vehicle power adaptors (12–24 V or 12–60 V), battery eliminators, quick-release mounts for forklifts and holders for external fan-fold stock. Ask through the spares enquiry form or browse printer spares and accessories.
The smart battery reports its capacity, charge level and charge-cycle history to TSC Console or SOTI Connect. Supervisors can retire tired batteries before they fail on a route. A 4-slot charger keeps spares ready for the next shift.
Warranty and repairs
TSC gives the Alpha-30L and Alpha-40L a 2-year return-to-factory warranty on parts and labour. The printhead and platen roller are excluded, and the user cannot replace them, so send the unit to an authorized partner. Our TSC service centre in Delhi handles Alpha repairs. The Alpha-3R also carries a 2-year standard warranty.
Common problems and fixes
- Phone will not pair: switch Bluetooth on in the phone, retry NFC tap-to-pair, then use the TSC Mobile Utility app to check the connection.
- Labels feed past the gap: reload with the printed side out and recalibrate for the media type.
- Faded or grey print: raise density or lower speed in TSC Console (Printer Configuration, Get, change values, Set), or switch to better direct thermal stock.
- Battery not lasting a shift: check battery health in TSC Console, rotate spares, or mount the printer with a vehicle adaptor or battery eliminator.
- Cannot reach the printer in TSC Console Web: Console Web works over a network only, so use the Wi-Fi version.
- RFID label voided with stripes: the tag failed to encode and the printer overstruck it. Rerun calibration and confirm the inlay is UHF.

Warranty and cover options
New printers ship with the standard manufacturer's warranty against manufacturing defects. Longer cover can only be bought at the time you buy the printer. You can choose a 1-year extended warranty, or a comprehensive warranty for 3 or 5 years, such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack. There is no 1-year comprehensive option, and comprehensive cover can't be added later. The comprehensive warranty takes the place of the standard warranty, and both run together from the printer's invoice date. So a 5-year plan means 5 years in total, not 1 + 5. Once cover ends, ask us about an AMC.
Frequently asked questions
Do TSC Alpha printers need a ribbon?
No. Every Alpha model is direct thermal only, so you load heat-sensitive receipt paper or direct thermal labels and no ribbon at all.
How long does an Alpha battery last on a delivery route?
It depends on usage. In TSC’s test, which printed one receipt each 2 minutes via Bluetooth, the Alpha-30L kept going past 23.5 hours on a charge, and the Alpha-40L past 45 hours. The Alpha-3R lasted over 30 hours of receipt printing.
Should I buy the Alpha-30L or the Alpha-40L for courier labels?
Choose the Alpha-40L. Its 104 mm print width suits standard 4-inch shipping labels, while the Alpha-30L prints 72 mm wide and is better for shelf and small product labels.
Is the Alpha-30R Premium worth it over the Basic?
Pick the Premium if speed or fleet management matters. It prints at up to 6 ips against 5 ips and supports SOTI Connect as well as TSC Console. The Basic is fine for a small team.
Can I mount an Alpha-40L on a forklift or delivery van?
Yes. TSC sells a quick-release mount kit for forklifts, in-vehicle power adaptors, and battery eliminators that run the printer straight off vehicle power. External fan-fold holders let it feed long stacks of labels.
What RFID tags does the Alpha-40L RFID encode?
It handles RAIN UHF tags, writing to the GS1 EPC Gen2 v2 (ISO 18000-63) standard. It works with gap or black-mark RFID labels on 0.75, 1 and 1.5 inch cores, down to 0.625 inch long.
Who replaces the printhead on an Alpha-30L or Alpha-40L?
An authorized service partner. TSC states the printhead and platen roller on these models are not user-replaceable, so send the printer in for repair.
Can I get fleet pricing for Alpha printers?
Yes. Single-unit prices are on each product page. For a fleet, or printers bundled with spare batteries, chargers, cases and media, ask us for a bulk or project quote.
