Quick answer
Buy a 4-inch MH241T at 203 dpi for fast shipping, carton and pallet labels, an MH341 at 300 dpi as the all-round choice for GS1 and pharma labels, and an MH641T at 600 dpi only when you need micro text or very small 2D codes. If your label is wider than about 104 mm of printable area, move to a 6-inch MH261T (203 dpi) or MH361T (300 dpi).
All MH printers share a die-cast mechanism and base, an 8-inch label roll capacity and both thermal transfer and direct thermal printing. They are built for lines that print all day, which is where they earn their place over desktop models.
Which model should you buy?
| Your main job | Best MH fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Courier, dispatch and carton labels at volume | MH241T (203 dpi) | Fastest in the range at up to 14 ips, and labels up to 1,000 inches long |
| GS1, pharma carton and small-font labels | MH341P or MH341T (300 dpi) | Sharper output while still running at up to 12 ips |
| PCB, component, jewellery and tiny DataMatrix labels | MH641T (600 dpi) | 24 dots per mm for fine detail; slower at 6 ips, and labels are limited to 100 inches |
| 6-inch pallet, drum or warning labels | MH261T (203 dpi) | 168 mm print width at up to 12 ips |
| 6-inch labels that need finer print | MH361T (300 dpi) | Same 168 mm width with sharper detail, at up to 10 ips |
The 4-inch family comes as standard, T and P versions. TSC fits a media near-end sensor on the T and P models, so the colour screen alerts staff when labels are nearly finished. If you are unsure which variant fits your line, tell us your label size, volume and software and we will suggest one.

Before it arrives: space, power and cores
- Footprint: a 4-inch MH is 276 mm wide, 326 mm high and 502 mm deep and weighs about 15.6 kg (15.7 kg for the T version). Give it a solid bench.
- Power: the internal switching supply accepts AC 100–240 V at 50–60 Hz.
- Environment: TSC rates operation from 0°C to 40°C with 25–85% non-condensing humidity.
- Label cores: the 4-inch models take label rolls on 1.5-inch or 3-inch cores. If your converter supplies 1-inch cores, order the 1-inch core media spindle (a dealer option) or ask for a different core.
Setting it up
- Choose the connection. Standard ports are USB 2.0, two front USB host ports (for a scanner or keyboard), RS-232 and 10/100 Ethernet. GPIO with a Centronics parallel port and internal Bluetooth 5.0 MFi are factory options; a slot-in Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac module with Bluetooth 4.2 is a dealer option.
- Install the driver first. Let Windows detect the printer or install TSC's driver manually (Windows 32/64-bit, not ARM; macOS and Linux drivers are also published), then power on and connect.
- Load media and ribbon. The 4-inch models accept media 20–114 mm wide and 0.06–0.28 mm thick, and ribbons up to 600 m (90 mm maximum roll diameter, 1-inch core, ink in or out) from 25.4 to 114.3 mm wide. On the 6-inch pair, ribbon length tops out at 450 m and width spans 50.8–178 mm.
- Set the black-mark side. On the 4-inch MH241 family you can select a top-side or bottom-side black mark from the panel menu. The 6-inch models read bottom-side marks only.
- Calibrate. On the printer go to Menu, Sensor, Calibration, Auto Calibration. From a PC, use TSC Console: select the printer, then Functions, Printer Configuration, Calibration.
- Test your formats. TSPL-EZD understands EPL, ZPL, ZPL II and DPL commands, which means existing jobs usually print unchanged. Store extra fonts, graphics and formats on a microSD card of up to 32 GB.
For label design, the printer supports TSC BarTender UltraLite; for ERP or database printing see label design software.
Running costs and consumables
- Ribbons: wax for paper labels, wax-resin for coated paper and many synthetics, resin for polyester and polypropylene. Shop thermal transfer ribbons. A 600 m ribbon matched with an 8-inch label roll keeps changeovers rare.
- Labels: see barcode labels and stickers, including tags, perforated and care-label stock for the 4-inch models.
- Printheads by resolution: PH-MH241-0001 (also listed as PH-MH241-0004) fits MH240/MH241 and their P and T versions; PH-MH241-0002 (also PH-MH241-0005) fits MH340/MH341, P and T; PH-MH241-0003 fits MH640/MH641, P and T. The head warranty is 1 year or 25 km, whichever comes first, and excludes white dots, physical damage and scratches.
- Finishing options: regular, heavy-duty and care-label cutters, a peel-off kit, a 5-inch internal rewinder and cutter trays. Browse printer spares and accessories or use the spares enquiry form.
TSC's datasheet gives the printer itself a 2-year warranty, the printhead 12 months or 25 km (1 million inches), and the platen 12 months or 50 km, whichever is earlier. The printhead and platen roller can be swapped without special tools, so many plants keep one spare head on the shelf.
Common problems and fixes
- Printer cannot find the media type after calibration. Check that the labels are loaded correctly and sit over the sensor, and that you selected the right media type (gap, black mark or continuous).
- Wrinkles on the printout. Check that printhead pressure is even, use the correct ribbon, and keep the ribbon only slightly wider than the label. The MH mechanism has fine adjustment for this.
- BarTender will not print. Confirm the printer is on, then check the printer selected, the port and the driver.
- No printing over Ethernet. Reseat the cable and check that the port lights are flashing.
- Settings have gone wrong. Reset from Menu, Advanced, Initialization, or from TSC Console under Printer Configuration, Factory Default.
- Print quality dropping over time. Check the Sense Care printhead health reading, clean the head, and plan a replacement head before rejected labels pile up.

Warranty and cover options
New printers ship with the standard manufacturer's warranty against manufacturing defects. Longer cover can only be bought at the time you buy the printer. You can choose a 1-year extended warranty, or a comprehensive warranty for 3 or 5 years, such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack. There is no 1-year comprehensive option, and comprehensive cover can't be added later. The comprehensive warranty takes the place of the standard warranty, and both run together from the printer's invoice date. So a 5-year plan means 5 years in total, not 1 + 5. Once cover ends, ask us about an AMC.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 600 dpi MH641T worth the extra speed loss?
Only if your labels carry micro text or very small 2D codes. It runs at up to 6 ips compared with 12 ips at 300 dpi, and its longest label is 100 inches, so most users are better served by the MH341.
Can an MH printer use labels on a 1-inch core?
The 4-inch models take 1.5-inch and 3-inch cores as standard. TSC offers a 1-inch core media spindle as a dealer option, so ask for it when you order.
How do I run auto calibration on an MH241T?
On the printer, open Menu, Sensor, Calibration, Auto Calibration. You can also start it from TSC Console under Functions, Printer Configuration, Calibration. Make sure the media sits over the sensor first.
Which printhead do I need for an MH341P?
The 300 dpi head, part PH-MH241-0002 (also listed as PH-MH241-0005), fits all six 300 dpi variants: MH340, MH341 and their P and T versions.
What warranty comes with an MH printer?
TSC lists 2 years on the printer, 25 km or 12 months on the printhead, and 50 km or 12 months on the platen, whichever is reached earlier.
Will my current ZPL or EPL labels print on an MH printer?
Usually yes. Because TSPL-EZD accepts EPL, ZPL, ZPL II and DPL, existing formats and ERP jobs normally run without changes. Test each template before go-live.
Does the 6-inch MH361T read top-side black marks?
No. The 6-inch MH261T and MH361T read bottom-side black marks only. The 4-inch MH241 family lets you choose top or bottom in the panel menu.
How can I get a quote for several MH printers?
Single-unit prices are on each product page. For multiple printers or a bundle with labels, ribbons and spare printheads, ask us for a bulk or project quote.
