Buying a TSC Print Engine for Your Label Applicator: PEX-2000 vs Print Modules

Quick answer

If you are building or upgrading an automatic label applicator for round-the-clock use, the TSC PEX-2000 is the engine to specify. It comes in 4-inch (203, 300 and 600 dpi) and 6-inch (203 and 300 dpi) widths, each in left-hand or right-hand form. TSC's MH, MB and TE print modules are simpler alternatives for industrial, fast-throughput and light-duty machines respectively.

A print engine is a printer without the usual cabinet. It bolts into an applicator, takes its start signal over GPIO, and prints a label that a tamp, blow or wipe mechanism then places on the product.

Which model should you buy?

Your situation Recommended Reason
High-speed carton line running 24/7 PEX-2240 (4-inch, 203 dpi) Up to 18 ips; TSC quotes MTBF of up to 22,000 hours

Left or right hand? The L and R versions mirror the media path. Confirm with your applicator builder which side the label must exit, and order the matching hand.

Engines and modules are usually supplied as part of a project, so ask us for a project quote with your applicator details, label size and line speed. For standalone printers on the same line, see TSC industrial barcode printers.

Commissioning checklist for the PEX-2000

  1. Mounting. The engine mounts in any orientation. The 4-inch unit measures 245 × 300 × 390 mm and weighs 12.7 kg net. TSC says the 6-inch model's rear section is 14% smaller than before, which eases fitting.
  2. Power. The auto-sensing supply accepts AC 100–240 V at 50–60 Hz.
  3. GPIO. A DB15F GPIO with Centronics port is built in, and a DB25F GPIO is available as an accessory. Pick the connector and emulation that match the applicator's existing cable.
  4. Host connection. USB 2.0, RS-232, 10/100 Ethernet and two USB host ports (front and rear) are standard. An internal Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo module is optional.
  5. Language. Standard firmware is TSPL-EZD, which also understands EPL, ZPL, ZPL II and DPL. A TSPL-EZS firmware option adds SBPL for lines moving from other engines.
  6. Display. If the engine is mounted upside down, flip the 3.5-inch colour screen via Menu, Advance, LCD Invert.
  7. Clone the setup. Copy configuration, firmware or label formats to a USB flash drive and load them onto the next engine. TSC also allows up to five saved configuration sets for quick redeployment.

Media, sensors and calibration

  • Media: the 4-inch engine takes outside-wound stock 16–118 mm wide and 0.076–0.305 mm thick, in continuous, die-cut, black-mark, fan-fold or notched form.
  • Gap sensor: by default it sits on the rear label holder cover (green LED) and can be positioned from 1 to 98 mm. For micro labels, switch to the front gap sensor via Sensor, Gap Location, Front.
  • Black mark on the printed side: for pre-printed stock, set Sensor, Black Mark Location, Print Side, then position the top black-mark sensor (adjustable from 5 to 92 mm).
  • Accuracy: TSC specifies labels down to 5 mm long and print deviation within ±0.4 mm.
  • Peel angle: the metal peel-off module adjusts from minus 18 to minus 3 degrees to suit the applicator pad.
  • Thick RFID tags: with the optional RFID module, the engine handles tags from 0.9 to 1.2 mm thick once the front gap sensor wall is lifted. Long back-feed lets it overstrike tags that fail to encode.

Calibrate after every media change, either from the engine menu or from TSC Console under Functions, Printer Configuration, Calibration.

Running costs and consumables

  • Ribbons: 600 m on a 1-inch core with a 90 mm maximum roll diameter, ink in or out. The 4-inch engine takes 25.4–114.3 mm widths, and the 6-inch engine takes ribbons up to 180 mm wide. The optional Ribbon Saver cuts ribbon use. Shop thermal transfer ribbons.
  • Labels: applicator lines use a lot of stock, so standardise one or two sizes. See barcode labels and stickers.
  • Wear parts: the printhead, platen roller and media drive belt. Keep a spare head on site. For engine and module parts, use the spares enquiry form or browse TSC genuine printheads.

Keeping the line running

  • Printhead swap: a one-push quick release makes taking the head out and fitting a new one straightforward.
  • Drive module: open the rear cover and replace either the whole media drive module or just the belt, which TSC says takes no more than 15 minutes.
  • Rear chassis: it lifts and pulls out in two steps while the engine stays on the applicator.
  • Monitoring: TSC Console (on your intranet) and SOTI Connect (web-based, licence required) handle deployment, alerts and firmware. Sense Care tracks the printhead odometer so replacements can be planned. Console traffic uses port 3007 and prints over port 9100, and the two do not interfere.
  • Door security: a magnetic lock keeps the media door shut under vibration in any orientation.

Typical uses include carton shipping, pallet labelling and pharma packs. See warehouse and logistics printing and manufacturing identification.

Warranty and cover options

New printers ship with the standard manufacturer's warranty against manufacturing defects. Longer cover can only be bought at the time you buy the printer. You can choose a 1-year extended warranty, or a comprehensive warranty for 3 or 5 years, such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack. There is no 1-year comprehensive option, and comprehensive cover can't be added later. The comprehensive warranty takes the place of the standard warranty, and both run together from the printer's invoice date. So a 5-year plan means 5 years in total, not 1 + 5. Once cover ends, ask us about an AMC.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a print engine or a normal printer for my packing line?

Choose an engine if labels are applied automatically by a tamp, blow or wipe applicator. Engines mount in any orientation and take GPIO signals. A normal printer suits manual peel-and-stick work at a bench.

How do I decide between the PEX-2240L and PEX-2240R?

The L and R versions mirror the media path. Ask your applicator builder which side the label must exit, then order the matching version.

Can I copy settings from one PEX-2000 to another?

Yes. You can clone the configuration, firmware or label formats to a USB flash drive and load them on another engine. Up to five configuration sets can also be saved for quick redeployment.

How do I set up a PEX-2000 for micro labels?

Switch to the front gap sensor via Sensor, Gap Location, Front, then calibrate. TSC specifies labels down to 5 mm long with print deviation within ±0.4 mm.

Can the display be read if the engine is mounted upside down?

Yes. Go to Menu, Advance, LCD Invert to rotate the screen 180 degrees.

What label languages does the PEX-2000 accept?

The standard TSPL-EZD firmware accepts EPL, ZPL, ZPL II and DPL commands. An optional TSPL-EZS firmware adds SBPL compatibility, so existing templates usually need no changes.

Can the PEX-2000 encode thick RFID tags?

With the optional RFID module, yes. It accepts tags from 0.9 to 1.2 mm thick once the front gap sensor wall is lifted, and back-feeds to overstrike tags that fail to encode.

How quickly can a worn drive belt be replaced?

The media drive module sits behind the rear cover. You can replace the whole module or only the belt, and TSC says the job takes no more than 15 minutes.
