Quick answer: For one PC printing courier and barcode labels over USB, a 203 dpi TE model such as the TE244 or TE200 is usually enough. If the printer will sit on your office network, or you print small text and dense 2D codes, step up to the TE210 (203 dpi) or the TE310 (300 dpi). Every TE200-family model can run with or without a ribbon, so a single machine handles both paper shipping labels and longer-lasting product labels.
Who the TE range is really for
Think of the TE printers as the workhorse of a small office, shop or dispatch table. TSC built them around a modular print mechanism inside a tough ABS plastic case, with a 32-bit RISC processor, and rates them for thousands of labels per day. They are not meant to run three shifts on a production line; for that, look at the TSC industrial printers. For steady daily volumes, a TE needs only about 204 mm by 280 mm of desk space.
Which model should you buy?
Start from how the printer will be connected and how small your printed details are. The table below lists each model with the situation it suits best.
| Model | Resolution and top speed | Connections out of the box | Pick this if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| TE200 | 203 dpi, 6 inches per second | USB 2.0 (Bluetooth as an option) | one computer prints shipping or price labels and you want the simplest set-up |
| TE244 | 203 dpi, 4-inch print width | USB | you want a proven, economical desk printer for address, courier and barcode labels |
| TE210 | 203 dpi, 6 inches per second | USB 2.0, Ethernet, RS-232 serial, USB host | several people share the printer over the LAN, or you want to plug in a scanner or keyboard |
| TE300 | 300 dpi, 5 inches per second | USB 2.0 (Bluetooth as an option) | labels are small and carry fine text, but only one PC prints |
| TE310 | 300 dpi, 5 inches per second | USB 2.0, Ethernet, RS-232 serial, USB host | you need sharp small print, networking, larger memory and long labels up to 450 inches |
Two other differences matter in daily use. The networked TE210 and TE310 carry 64 MB of DRAM and 128 MB of Flash, against 16 MB and 8 MB on the TE200 and TE300, so they cope better with big logos and long print queues. They also add a real-time clock and a buzzer, and accept the optional guillotine cutter for full or partial cuts. Wireless options on the TE210 and TE310 include Bluetooth 5.0 or a Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n plus Bluetooth combo module.

Paper-only or ribbon printing?
Direct thermal printing darkens heat-sensitive labels without any ribbon. It is the cheapest way to print e-commerce and courier labels that only need to last until delivery. Thermal transfer melts ink from a ribbon onto the label, so the print survives rubbing, sunlight and storage, which suits product, asset and inventory labels.
Setting it up
Loading the label roll
- Open the top cover and fit the roll on the supply spindle with the printable side facing up. TE printers take outside-wound media.
- Use rolls up to 127 mm (5 inches) outer diameter on a 1-inch or 1.5-inch core. For bigger 8-inch rolls, TSC offers an optional external unwinder.
- Thread the liner under the guides and slide the guides in until they just touch the edges of the roll. Media can be 20 mm to 112 mm wide and 0.06 mm to 0.19 mm thick.
Fitting a ribbon
- Use ribbons coated on the outside, 40 mm to 110 mm wide.
- The TE accepts a long 300 m ribbon on a 1-inch core or a shorter 110 m ribbon on a half-inch core. Choose the 300 m size if you want fewer roll changes.
- Make sure the ribbon is a little wider than the label so the printhead never rubs bare label stock.
Calibrating the sensor
After loading a new type of label, run a media calibration so the printer learns where each label starts. A transmissive gap sensor handles die-cut and notched labels, and a reflective black-mark sensor, whose position you can adjust, reads labels with a printed mark on the back. You can start calibration from the printer itself, from the Diagnostic Tool, or in TSC Console by selecting the printer and opening Functions, then Printer Configuration, then Calibration. Speed and darkness can be set from the same configuration screen.
Drivers and label software
TSC publishes Windows drivers for Windows 7 to Windows 11 and Windows Server editions, plus macOS and Linux drivers. For label design, TSC BarTender UltraLite is available as a free download, and if you need database or ERP links, see our BarTender editions. Because the TSPL-EZD language also understands EPL, ZPL, ZPL II and DPL, label formats from an older printer usually print without being redesigned.
Running costs and consumables
Ongoing spend is mainly labels, ribbons and, eventually, a printhead.
- Buy the 300 m ribbon where possible. One roll lasts much longer than a 110 m roll, so you stop less often to change it.
- Match the ribbon to the label: wax for paper, wax-resin for semi-gloss or tougher paper, resin for polyester and synthetic labels. Find stock in thermal transfer ribbons and barcode labels and stickers.
- For courier work, use direct thermal 4x6 rolls from our e-commerce shipping labels range and skip the ribbon altogether.
- Prices are shown on each product page. For regular monthly consumption, ask for a bulk or project quote.
The printhead that fits
The genuine TSC TE200 / TE210 203 dpi printhead (part PH-TE200-0001, alternate 98-0650008-00LF) fits the TE200, TE210 and TE244. Its warranty runs for 1 year or 25 km of printing, whichever comes first, and does not cover white dots, scratches or physical damage. Both the printhead and the platen roller can be swapped without tools. For a 300 dpi TE300 or TE310 head, or any other spare, send us a spares enquiry or check the TSC genuine printheads collection.
Common problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Printing drifts or skips a label | Sensor not set for the new media | Run media calibration and check the black-mark sensor position |
| Faint or patchy print | Darkness too low or speed too high | Raise density or lower speed in the driver or TSC Console |
| Thin white lines through barcodes | Dirty or damaged printhead | Clean the head; if lines stay, replace it |
| Printer stops with the ribbon fitted | Ribbon end or head-open sensor triggered | Reload the ribbon and close the head firmly |
| Print starts in the wrong place | Print or tear offset | Adjust the position in the Diagnostic Tool or BarTender |
The single LED on the front changes between green, amber and red to show status. If a fault persists, our TSC service centre in Delhi can inspect the printer.
Managing several TE printers
If you run a few TE210 or TE310 units over the network, TSC Console Web can push firmware remotely, display printhead mileage on a dashboard and set up maintenance reminders. It needs Ethernet or Wi-Fi and does not work over USB.
Warranty and cover options
New printers ship with the standard manufacturer's warranty against manufacturing defects. Longer cover can only be bought at the time you buy the printer. You can choose a 1-year extended warranty, or a comprehensive warranty for 3 or 5 years, such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack. There is no 1-year comprehensive option, and comprehensive cover can't be added later. The comprehensive warranty takes the place of the standard warranty, and both run together from the printer's invoice date. So a 5-year plan means 5 years in total, not 1 + 5. Once cover ends, ask us about an AMC.
Frequently asked questions
Can a TE printer use the ribbons I already have?
Most likely. The TE takes outside-coated ribbons from 40 mm to 110 mm wide, either 300 m on a 1-inch core or 110 m on a half-inch core, so both common sizes fit.
Do I need a ribbon for Amazon or Flipkart shipping labels?
No. Courier labels are usually printed direct thermal on heat-sensitive 4x6 labels, which need no ribbon. Add a ribbon only when the label must last longer.
Is the TE244 printhead the same as the TE210 head?
Yes. The genuine TSC printhead PH-TE200-0001 (alternate 98-0650008-00LF) fits the TE200, TE210 and TE244, all of which are 203 dpi models.
How do I calibrate a TSC TE printer after changing label size?
Load the new roll, set the guides and run media calibration from the printer, the Diagnostic Tool or TSC Console (Functions, Printer Configuration, Calibration). The printer then detects the gap or black mark.
Should I choose the TE210 or the TE310?
Both have the same ports and memory. Choose the TE210 for faster 203 dpi printing at up to 6 inches per second, or the TE310 for 300 dpi detail on small labels at up to 5 inches per second.
Will my old label formats print on a TE printer?
Usually, yes. TSPL-EZD is compatible with EPL, ZPL, ZPL II and DPL, so formats made for many older printers work without a redesign. You can send us a sample file to test.
Can TSC Console Web manage a TE printer over USB?
No. TSC Console Web needs a wired or wireless network connection, so use the TE210 or TE310 with Ethernet or Wi-Fi if you want remote management.
