TSC DA210, DA220 & DA310 Buying Guide: Ribbon-Free Label Printing Made Easy

Quick answer: A TSC DA printer is the simplest way to print courier, billing and short-life product labels, because it uses heat-sensitive labels and never needs a ribbon. Choose a 203 dpi model (DA210 or DA220) for 4x6 shipping labels and speed, or a 300 dpi model (DA310 or DA320) for small labels and fine print. Pick the DA220 or DA320 only if the printer must sit on a network or connect over serial.

Is a ribbon-free printer right for you?

Direct thermal printing is perfect when a label only has to survive a few weeks or months: a courier slip, a billing sticker, a token or a pharmacy bag label. It is the wrong choice when labels must stay readable for years, or face sunlight, heat and constant handling, because direct thermal print can fade. In that case, a dual-mode printer that can run a ribbon, from our TSC desktop printers range, is the safer buy. If your labels fall in the first group, a DA printer saves you money and effort every single day.

Which model should you buy?

Model Resolution and top speed How it connects Pick this if…
DA210 203 dpi, 6 inches per second USB 2.0; Bluetooth as an option one PC prints Amazon, Flipkart or courier labels and you want plug-and-print
DA220 203 dpi, 6 inches per second USB 2.0, Ethernet, RS-232, USB host; Wi-Fi options several systems share one printer, or you link it to a scale or older serial device
DA310 300 dpi, 4 inches per second USB 2.0; Bluetooth as an option labels are small, such as pharmacy or shelf labels, and one PC prints
DA320 300 dpi, 4 inches per second USB 2.0, Ethernet, RS-232, USB host; Wi-Fi options you need fine print and network sharing together
DA300 300 dpi USB you want a 300 dpi USB unit for high-quality small labels

Memory follows the same split. The DA210 and DA310 carry 16 MB DRAM and 8 MB Flash, which is enough for everyday label formats. The DA220 and DA320 have 64 MB SDRAM and 128 MB Flash, so you can store more fonts, international character sets and graphics on the printer. Maximum label length also rises, from 110 inches on the DA210 to 1,000 inches on the DA220. Current prices are shown on each product page, and for a roll-out across several counters or branches you can ask for a project quote.

TSC has also announced the DA241 and DA341, which double the SDRAM, print natively on linerless labels and add HTTPS and SNMPv3 security for managed fleets. There are HC versions too, with an antibacterial, disinfectant-ready case and an IEC 60601-1 certified power supply for hospitals. Ask us about availability if those features matter to you.

Setting it up

Unbox and connect

The box contains a quick start guide, USB cable, power cord and external power supply. The printer is small, about 172 x 165 x 195 mm (W x H x D), and weighs 1.5 kg. Install the TSC Windows driver, which supports Windows 7 to Windows 11 and Windows Server editions. macOS and Linux drivers are also available.

Loading labels

  • Open the clamshell. The spring-loaded roll holder centres the roll automatically, so you simply drop it in with the printing side facing up.
  • Use outside-wound rolls up to 127 mm (5 inches) in diameter, on a 1-inch to 1.5-inch core.
  • Labels can be 19 mm to 114 mm wide, at least 10 mm long and 0.055 mm to 0.19 mm thick.
  • Close the lid firmly. A head-open sensor stops printing if the cover is not latched.

Calibrating for your labels

The DA senses the top of each label by gap, black mark or notch. When you change to a different label size or type, run a media calibration so the printer relearns the spacing. You can do this from the printer, the Diagnostic Tool or TSC Console. If labels still print slightly off, adjust the print position in the Diagnostic Tool, or set the tear position in BarTender. Print speed and darkness can be changed from BarTender or the driver.

Software

TSC offers BarTender UltraLite free for label design. For database-linked or ERP printing, compare our BarTender editions. The printer language, TSPL-EZD, also understands EPL, ZPL, ZPL II and DPL, so label formats built for many older printers can be reused.

Running costs and consumables

With no ribbon, your only regular purchase is labels. A few tips keep that cost under control:

  • Buy direct thermal stock, not plain paper labels meant for ribbon printing. Ordinary paper will not darken.
  • For marketplace and courier work, choose ready 4x6 rolls from our e-commerce shipping labels range. Other sizes are in barcode labels and stickers.
  • Keep spare rolls away from heat and sunlight, since direct thermal stock reacts to both even before printing.
  • Larger rolls mean fewer changes. TSC offers an external roll mount for big media rolls on DA models.
  • If you print labels every day, ask for a bulk quote on monthly label supply.

Which printhead and parts fit?

Printer Genuine printhead Head warranty
DA210, DA220 (203 dpi) Part PH-DA210-0001 1 year or 25 km, whichever is earlier
DA310, DA320 (300 dpi) Part 98-0580061-11LF 1 year or 25 km, whichever is earlier

White dots, scratches and physical damage are excluded from printhead warranty. TSC also offers a guillotine cutter for full or partial cuts and a peel-off module that presents labels flat, without wrinkles or tears. Ask through our spares enquiry page for these, for platen rollers, or for any part not listed in TSC genuine printheads.

Care tips that make the head last

  • Use good-quality labels. Gritty or poorly coated stock wears the head faster.
  • Clean the head gently when you change rolls if you see adhesive build-up or paper dust.
  • Do not run the darkness higher than you need. Extra heat shortens head life and can blur barcodes.
  • Keep the printer in a normal working room: TSC specifies 5°C to 40°C and 25% to 85% humidity, non-condensing.

Common problems and fixes

  • Nothing appears on the label: the roll may be loaded upside down, or the stock is not direct thermal. Flip the roll or change the media.
  • Labels skip or the LED turns red after a roll change: run calibration again and check the roll is seated in the holder.
  • Print is grey or patchy: increase darkness slightly or reduce speed, and clean the head.
  • Fine white lines through barcodes: clean the printhead; if the lines stay, replace it with the genuine part above.
  • Printer not found on the network (DA220/DA320): check the Ethernet cable and that the port lights are flashing.

The front LED shows green, amber or red to signal status. If a fault continues, our TSC service centre in Delhi can help.

Warranty and cover options

New printers ship with the standard manufacturer's warranty against manufacturing defects. Longer cover can only be bought at the time you buy the printer. You can choose a 1-year extended warranty, or a comprehensive warranty for 3 or 5 years, such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack. There is no 1-year comprehensive option, and comprehensive cover can't be added later. The comprehensive warranty takes the place of the standard warranty, and both run together from the printer's invoice date. So a 5-year plan means 5 years in total, not 1 + 5. Once cover ends, ask us about an AMC.

Frequently asked questions

Will a TSC DA printer work for Meesho, Amazon and Flipkart labels?

Yes. These marketplaces use 4x6 direct thermal shipping labels, which every 4-inch DA model prints. The 203 dpi DA210 or DA220 is the faster choice for busy dispatch desks.

Why do my DA labels come out blank?

Usually the roll is upside down or the labels are not direct thermal stock. Turn the roll so the heat-sensitive side faces the printhead, or switch to direct thermal labels.

How long do direct thermal labels last?

They suit labels needed for weeks or a few months. Heat, sunlight and handling make the print fade, so use a ribbon-based printer for labels that must last years.

Which printhead does the DA310 use?

The DA310 and DA320 use genuine TSC printhead part 98-0580061-11LF at 300 dpi. The DA210 and DA220 use part PH-DA210-0001 at 203 dpi.

Should I choose the DA210 or the DA220?

Both print at 203 dpi and up to 6 inches per second. Pick the DA210 for one PC over USB. Pick the DA220 for Ethernet, RS-232, USB host, Wi-Fi options and more memory.

Can I add a cutter to a DA printer?

Yes. TSC lists a guillotine cutter for full or partial cuts and a peel-off module for DA models. Contact us to confirm the right option for your unit.

What label widths does the DA Series accept?

Labels from 19 mm to 114 mm wide, at least 10 mm long, wound on a 1-inch to 1.5-inch core, in rolls no larger than 127 mm across.
