Quick answer
The T8000 is the top Printronix thermal printer, built for 24/7 operation and rated at up to 15,000 labels a day. Choose the width first (4, 6 or 8 inches) to match your largest label, then 203 dpi for speed or 300 dpi for fine detail. If a retailer, OEM or regulator can penalise you for unreadable barcodes, order the ODV-2D version, which grades every barcode and reprints any that fail.
Which T8000 should you buy?
All T8000 models share a die-cast aluminium frame with a metal door, 512 MB RAM and 128 MB flash, side loading for media and ribbon, a 625 m ribbon capacity and an 8-inch label roll. Ethernet, USB and serial are standard. The table below matches each width to the jobs it usually handles.
| Width | Models | Top speed (203 / 300 dpi) | Media width | Typical jobs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4-inch (4.1 in print) | T8204, T8304 | 14 / 12 ips | 1 to 4.5 in | Product, item and shipping labels for automotive, food and healthcare supply chains |
| 6-inch (6.6 in print) | T8206, T8306 | 12 / 10 ips | 2 to 6.8 in | Larger carton and pallet labels |
| 8-inch (8.5 in print) | T8208, T8308 | 10 / 8 ips | 3 to 8.75 in | The widest labels in the range |
Store models include the T8204, T8304, T8206, T8306 and T8308. The current price is on each product page, and we can quote for multi-line or multi-site orders. For more background, see the T8000 series page.
203 or 300 dpi? Use 203 dpi when labels carry large barcodes and speed matters. Use 300 dpi for small text, compact DataMatrix or QR codes. The choice is not permanent. The printheads are user-replaceable, and the printer detects a change between 203 and 300 dpi by itself.
Is ODV-2D worth it?
ODV-2D is an integrated verifier that reads every barcode on every label as it prints. It grades codes against ISO 15415, 15416 and 15426 and records the results. When a code fails, the printer strikes it over and prints a new label automatically, and the grading reports can be used to defend chargebacks and audits. It scans up to 4 inches wide and works with the 4-inch and 6-inch models. It is worth paying for when one unreadable barcode can lead to a fine, a returned shipment or a line stoppage. Options include the ready-built T8304 with 2D ODV barcode verifier and the ODV field kit for 6-inch T8000 (ODV2D-V3). See our guide on barcode grading in the Knowledge Base.
Matching the right printhead
Printheads snap in and need no tools. Order by width and resolution:
| Printer | Genuine printhead | Part number |
|---|---|---|
| T8204 (4 in, 203 dpi) | T8204 4-inch 200 dpi printhead | 258704-001 |
| T8304 (4 in, 300 dpi) | T8304 printhead assembly | 258704-002 |
| T8206 (6 in, 203 dpi) | 6-inch 200 dpi printhead | 258705-001 |
| T8306 (6 in, 300 dpi) | T8306 6-inch 300 dpi printhead | 258705-002 |
| T8208 (8 in, 203 dpi) | 8-inch 200 dpi printhead | 258706-001 |
| T8308 (8 in, 300 dpi) | T8308 8-inch 300 dpi printhead | 258706-002 |
The 200 dpi heads for the 6-inch and 8-inch sizes are also listed as fitting the T8306 and T8308, which lets you drop to 203 dpi on those printers if you need to. Our genuine heads come with a warranty of 1 year or 25 km, whichever is earlier. If you are unsure which part you need, send the printer serial number with a spares enquiry. More parts are in genuine Printronix printheads and spares and accessories.
Setting it up
- Load media and ribbon from the side. A loading illustration is printed inside the media cover, and the setup wizard on the colour display walks you through it. Ribbons sit on a 1 inch core, and labels on a 1.5 to 3 inch core.
- Calibrate. In the Settings menu, choose the gap or mark sensor and run Auto Calibrate. You can also make the printer calibrate at power-up or whenever the pivoting deck is closed.
- Tune print quality. Run the Print Quality Wizard from the Wizard menu before you lock the settings.
- Connect. If Wi-Fi is fitted, you can set it up from the front panel or over Ethernet. The printer uses one link at a time, and a connected Ethernet cable takes priority.
- Integrate. Built-in languages include PGL, ZGL, TGL, IGL, STGL, DGL and MGL. IPDS, TN5250 and PostScript/PDF are optional, and the T8000 integrates with ERP systems such as SAP and Oracle.
- Save it. Store up to five configurations. The optional quick change memory card holds the printer and network settings, so a replacement printer can be set up quickly.
Running costs and consumables
- Ribbon: wax, wax/resin or resin, up to 625 m. Ribbon width runs from 1 to 4.5 inches on 4-inch models, 2 to 6.8 inches on 6-inch models and 3 to 8.75 inches on 8-inch models. Long rolls and a dual-motor ribbon drive mean fewer changeovers. See thermal transfer ribbons.
- Labels: rolls or fan-fold labels, tags, paper, film and tickets, up to 0.254 mm thick and 99 inches long. Shop labels and stickers.
- Environment: rated for -5 to 40 °C and 20 to 85% non-condensing humidity, and able to print in sub-zero temperatures without a heated enclosure, depending on the media.
- Service cover: a 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack or a 1-year extended warranty, bought with the printer, keeps costs predictable.
Common problems and fixes
- Paper jam. Open the side door, clear the media and reload it as shown on the diagram. Printronix publishes a video on clearing a paper jam on the T8000.
- Labels misregister. Recheck the gap or mark sensor setting and run Auto Calibrate again.
- Faded or uneven barcodes. Clean the printhead and rerun the Print Quality Wizard. On ODV-2D models, a rising reject count is an early sign that the head needs attention.
- Settings are lost or corrupted. Restore factory defaults from Settings > Configs > Load Config > Factory, then reload your saved configuration.

Warranty and cover options
New printers ship with the standard manufacturer's warranty against manufacturing defects. Longer cover can only be bought at the time you buy the printer. You can choose a 1-year extended warranty, or a comprehensive warranty for 3 or 5 years, such as the 5-year Comprehensive Care Pack. There is no 1-year comprehensive option, and comprehensive cover can't be added later. The comprehensive warranty takes the place of the standard warranty, and both run together from the printer's invoice date. So a 5-year plan means 5 years in total, not 1 + 5. Once cover ends, ask us about an AMC.
FAQ
What daily volume can a T8000 handle?
The datasheet quotes a ceiling of 15,000 labels per day, and the printer it is designed for continuous 24/7 operation in harsh industrial settings.

The 300 dpi 6-inch printhead, part 258705-002. The 6-inch 200 dpi printhead, part 258705-001, is also listed for the T8306 if you want to switch to 203 dpi.
Will the T8000 recognise a printhead of a different resolution?
Yes. The printheads are user-replaceable, and the printer automatically detects and accepts a change from 203 to 300 dpi or back again.
Which standards does ODV-2D grade barcodes against?
The integrated ODV-2D verifier grades 1D and 2D barcodes based on ISO 15415, 15416 and 15426. It produces job grading reports and reprints labels with bad barcodes.
Can Wi-Fi and Ethernet be used together on a T8000?
No. The printer uses one link at a time. When an Ethernet cable is connected to a host, Ethernet is active; otherwise Wi-Fi is used.
Does the T8000 have a real-time clock for date-coded labels?
Yes, when the Wi-Fi option is fitted: that card carries a real-time clock. It supports time-restricted security certificates and can print time stamps on date-coded labels.
How do I reset a T8000 to factory settings?
On the front panel, go to Settings > Configs > Load Config > Factory.
Can the T8000 work in cold stores?
Yes, within limits. Printronix tests it between -5 °C and +40 °C, and it needs no heated enclosure for below-freezing printing, but the media you choose sets the real limit.
